Every year I see most of my client’s mobile search traffic slightly increase and desktop slightly decrease. This is a worldwide trend – more and more people are searching for things on their mobiles. (Although in 2020 this trend reversed as people spent more time at home.)

Google now uses the mobile version of your website to rank it for all your keywords. So you need to make sure that your website is performing well in mobile search in order to be in the running for all the mobile users.

Outstrips Adwords significantly over the long term

Adwords results are often better than SEO results in the 1st year (given the same spend on both).

Take an example where you are a local business in a competitive industry, e.g. plumbers, and you invest $1000 a month into SEO and $1000 a month into Adwords. Somewhere around the 2nd-3rd year, your traffic from SEO will start outstripping your traffic from Adwords. Then, from year 4-6 onwards the traffic results from SEO are exponentially better than Adwords for the same spend.

Ranking in the organic listings gives you higher brand credibility than Ads. The perception is that any company can pay for Ads. But if you are number 1 in Google’s organic section, your potential client thinks that other people and Google must trust you. So they are more likely to trust you.

With SEO you can take a break for a few months and most likely still maintain your rankings and traffic. With Adwords, as soon as you stop paying, the traffic stops.
